Canadian support for Ukraine

Foreign minister says his country will never recognize Russian annexation of Crimea

KIEV, Ukraine – Canada on Tuesday backed Ukraine in its conflict with pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country.

Speaking at a press conference in Kiev, the NATO member’s Foreign Minister Rob Nicholson said: “Canada will never recognize Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and Russia’s puppets in eastern Ukraine.”

Nicholson’s remarks came after meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

Yatsenyuk said Ukraine hoped to sign a free trade agreement with Canada in the near future.

Fighting in eastern Ukraine has left more than 6,000 dead since April 2014, according to the UN. Russia annexed Crimea in March last year.
