Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards commander has accused Saudi Arabia of “unashamedly” attacking Yemen.
TEHRAN – A top Iranian military commander has accused the Saudi government of following in the footsteps of Israel and slammed the Saudi-led operation in Yemen, Iran’s state agency, IRNA, said Monday.
“Saudi rulers follow Israel as a role model,” Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Commander Brigadier General Mohammad Ali Jafari said in the Iranian capital of Tehran.
Jafari accused Saudi Arabia of “unashamedly” attacking Yemen. “Saudi Arabia, absolutely unashamed of its behavior, continues to target a nation which is seeking to oppose the hegemonic system of the world with bombs and is massacring them,” he said.
According to the IRNA, the commander also said: “Saudi regime is on the verge of collapse and elimination.”
On April 21, the Saudi king ordered his troops to participate in the ongoing Saudi-led campaign against Yemen’s Shia Houthi group.
However, a few hours later, the Saudi-led coalition command announced the end of the campaign after 27 days of airstrikes across Yemen.
Yemen has been in turmoil since 2011 when a popular uprising forced ex-President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down a year later.
