Survivor of Heart Transplant Gets to Hold Newborn Baby, Dies Hours Later

31-year-old Megan Moss Johnson died eight hours after giving birth due to complications

Megan Moss Johnson received a heart transplant seven years ago at the age of 23 due a virus contracted in her mid-teens that led to myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart.

Johnson kept up a blog about her journey with her heart condition in a blog and later, a book entitled “Megan’s Heart.”

“I never thought about being an organ donor until I needed one. It can save lives. It saved mine. It’s the gift of life,” Johnson said in a statement to media at the time of her transplant.

One year after her transplant, Johnson married Christian music artist Nathan and moved to Nashville, Tennessee.

First-time parents “overjoyed” at the birth of their daughter

Before 3AM on Tuesday, the Johnsons gave birth to daughter Eilee Kate Johnson.

Nathan celebrated the occasion by posting a photo of his wife and baby to Instagram, saying: “Megan was/is a professional and feels great. Her heart worked perfectly the whole time and Eilee introduced herself quickly and smooth. I am a rich man!!!”

A friend of the couple, fellow Christian singer Josh Wilson, set up a GoFundMe page for Nathan and his daughter.

“Nathan is devastated,” Wilson stated on the page. “There are no words for this, so I won’t really say much more. Here is what I know. Nathan is a wonderful man and an amazing father. He loves his daughter dearly.”

As of Friday afternoon, over $350,000 had been donated to the campaign to contribute towards food and various other expenses for Nathan and his daughter.

Wilson went on to state that as an advocate of organ donation, Johnson’s organs would benefit countless others. “Her organs are going to save over 50 lives. She’s going to change the lives of a lot of people because of that.”
