Suspected Russian spy arrested in Lithuania

The suspect is accused of working for the Russian Federal Security Service.

VILNIUS, Lithuania – A Russian citizen was arrested Monday in Lithuania on suspicion of spying, the Lithuanian State Security Department said in a statement.

According to the department, the suspect who had been detained on April 29 was an employee of the Russian Federal Security Service.

A regional court approved the prosecutor’s request to put the suspect under arrest for three months.

The Lithuanian State Security Department alleged that the Russian Federal Security Service wanted to manipulate and influence the decision-making processes in Lithuania at the highest levels.

“The detainee doesn’t have diplomatic status. Some members of the Russian private service concealed themselves under different names. They are introducing themselves as businessmen, scientists and drivers,” Arvydas Anusauskas, a member of the Lithuanian parliament’s National Security and Defense Committee, said.
