Syria: Russian airstrikes kill 10 civilians in Aleppo

Russian warplanes target opposition-held districts in Aleppo

ALEPPO, Syria – Ten civilians were killed and another 20 injured Monday when Russian warplanes struck the northern city of Aleppo, according to the Syrian Civil Defense.

Ibrahim Laith, official of Syrian Civil Defense in the city, told Anadolu Agency that Russian warplanes hit districts of Aleppo – including al-Salihin, al-Hallok and al-Kellese – controlled by the Syrian opposition.

Civil Defense teams struggled to search for survivors under the debris of destroyed buildings, he added.

More than 30,000 Syrians have also fled their homes this past weekend in Aleppo’s western countryside, fearing attacks by Russian warplanes and regime forces.

Syria has remained locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011 when the regime of President Bashar al-Assad cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, more than 250,000 people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced, according to figures released by the UN.
