Three refugees drown in swollen Macedonian river

-Deaths come a week after Macedonia closed its frontier to refugees

BELGRADE, Serbia – Three refugees drowned trying to cross a river close to the Greek-Macedonia border Monday, officials said.

The two men and a woman died in the River Suva in Macedonia, the Interior Ministry said. They were among a group of 26 refugees attempting to cross the river, which has been swollen by recent rain.

Legis, a NGO that works with migrants, said the deaths occurred around 7.30 a.m. local time (0630GMT).

Their deaths came a week after Macedonia closed its borders to refugees seeking to travel from Greece to northern Europe.
