In a surprising twist, Liverpool has just announced that they have agreed on a deal to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for £35 million from Arsenal.
Oxlade-Chamberlain will now have his medical at St George’s Park before putting pen to paper for a five-year contract with Liverpool.
This is what Antonio Conte was trying to avoid when he wanted to push through the deal after agreeing a 40 million pounds deal with Arsenal on Monday. But it seemed it was inevitable as Chamberlain opted for Liverpool instead.
Arsenal had also wanted to sell the English player to Chelsea as they had told Klopp earlier this season that he was not or sale for any price.
Liverpool Was Always His First Choice
However, Chamberlain made the deal difficult as he stalled on having his medical at Chelsea or carrying out the necessary legal paperwork to finalize the deal before revealing that he wanted to move to Liverpool instead.
Arsenal was left with little choice but to start talks with the Merseyside club in order to finalize the deal before the close of the transfer window.
Liverpool had budgeted 10 million pounds for the utility player but was forced to increase their bid to match up that of Chelsea. His signing is expected to increase the competition for a place in the starting lineup at Liverpool.
Oxlade-Chamberlain made the decision to move to Liverpool as he believes that he has more opportunity to play in a midfield role at Liverpool than at Chelsea.
